In the words of the 90s rock band Staind, “It’s Been Awhile.”
We are glad you have found your way back, and with summer around the corner, there is no better time to revamp our fridges and find our favorite “go-tos.” No reason to waste any more time, let’s spring right back to it.
Here is what we tried this week!
Tiny Bomb - American Pilsner
Wiseacre Brewing Company (Memphis, TN)
4.5% ABV
The Can: The vibrant green and yellow, along with the bold and dark outlining, does a great job to help bring attention to the can. The large font used for the name of the beer gives the drinker a sense that what they are about to take a sip of is going to be bold and make a statement. The detail in the image and pattern of an explosion assists the overall can with its intrigue and detail.
The Taste: While not the initial explosion of taste one may have anticipated from the name and the can, bold flavors are definitely in play in this beer. The sip starts with a bit of lemon, while fading into a noticeable taste of malts and some hops. This profile gives the flavor more of an herb taste, but it’s mellow enough that the blend mixes evenly and well.
The Situation: Have you ever ordered a burger at a restaurant and thought to yourself, “Hmm. What cold craft beer would taste good with a burger?” This one may be just the “tiny bomb” you need to supplement the great taste of that burger!
Fun Fact: On top of a combination of German and American malt, each Tiny Bomb is also made with wildflower honey.
Hazy Session IPA
Four Sixes Grit & Glory Brewing Co. (San Jose, CA)
4.8% ABV
The Can: This can is fairly simple. No big, smack you in the face colors, and no crazy artwork that goes out of its way to grab one’s attention. However, I do enjoy the dark burgundies and purples used to create more of a “rustic” feeling. With a name like “Grit & Glory”, less flashy and more observational tones makes sense here.
The Taste: The citrus in this beer hits the tastebuds right away. This beer is made with pineapple, as well, but the taste of it is very little to known. If you concentrate, you can pull it out at the end of the sip, but it is not the pronounced flavor. Overall, the beer is hoppy, but not overwhelming. The citrus helps to blend things together nicely.
The Situation: The can, the taste, and the overall aesthetic puts me in the Southwest for this situation. I imagine a nice pint glass of a Four Sixes Hazy Session IPA while fiddles play, couples dance, and cowboy hats are a plenty. With the bright flavor citrus, you may just get the urge to grab your partner and swing em ‘round.
Fun Fact: Four Sixes Grit & Glory Brewing was started by Yellowstone co-creator, Taylor Sheridan, after he had purchased the infamous 6666 Ranch in Texas.
ACE Pineapple - Cider
California Cider Company (Sebastopol, CA)
5.0% ABV
The Can: Another pretty basic can in the grand scheme of things. You know what you are going to get, plain and simple. The tones are a little bit of a drag while trying to promote a fruit from some very vibrant climates, but it keeps with the theme of simplicity.
The Taste: Wow. This cider may be one of the best I have ever tried, and I was definitely taken aback by the taste. The sip starts with what you would expect, a pineapple taste, but quickly is supplemented by the taste of apples. The apple taste comes clearly through throughout the sip. As the pineapple taste settles in, the sweetness of the apple comes through to finish strongly. A very easy drink.
The Situation: This is a drink that would go great with an umbrella topper and your toes in the sand. Whether it is in front of an ocean, a lake day, or just hanging around a bonfire with some friends, this light and refreshing cider helps bring you warmth and a smile with its fresh taste of summer.
Fun Fact: In 2013, ACE Pineapple Cider became the first World Original Pineapple Cider after the founder, Jeffrey House, found inspiration to use a pineapple in a cider through his family’s annual vacations to the Hawaiian Islands.
We hope you enjoyed your return to the “bar” and we are excited to get back on the tasting journey as we had into the summer season.
Until next time, bottoms up!
